Educate4Depth
Extra teaching, at the moment it changes a result.
Kodumela's learner enrichment programme, run as Summer, Winter and Spring schools. University students — many of them former learners of the same schools — return to tutor Grade 10 to 12 learners in the subjects that decide their futures.
Under-resourced rural schools rarely have the teaching hours to go back and repair the gaps that build up in mathematics, science and accounting. Educate4Depth uses the school holidays to do exactly that, before the gaps become a matric result.
The programme model
How it runs, stage by stage.
- 01
Identify need
Schools identify the subjects and topics where learners lose the most marks.
- 02
Match support
Tutors are recruited from universities across South Africa, many of them alumni of the same schools.
- 03
Deliver learning
Intensive holiday teaching covering the Grade 10–12 curriculum.
- 04
Expose opportunity
Improved results open tertiary study that was previously out of reach.
- 05
Follow progress
Matric results are tracked at school and circuit level, year on year.
What participants experience
- Small-group teaching in the subjects that decide admission
- Tutors who sat in the same classrooms a few years earlier
- Subject experts on the topics learners find hardest
- Three chances a year to catch up rather than one
Typical activities
- Winter School — the anchor programme, running since 2013
- Summer School — early exam preparation, so gaps surface at the start of the year
- Spring School — final revision close to the examinations
- Subject matter experts brought in for mathematics, science and accounting
